Enzo Maresca has opened up on his coaching methods and appears to have taken a thinly veiled swipe at Mauricio Pochettino with his answer.
The 44-year-old replaced the Argentine earlier this summer and has overseen an impressive start to the season with Chelsea collecting ten points from their first five games.
Maresca has won all his away games, but will be hoping to record his first league win at Stamford Bridge against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.
Maresca on his coaching methods
The squad seem to have adapted well to Maresca’s ideas so far but there’s still plenty of room for improvement with only five games played.
The players have spoken about how much they are enjoying life under Maresca and there seems to be a real togetherness within the squad.
Maresca is very hands on in training and is regularly seen getting involved in sessions, which is a stark contrast to what life was like under Pochettino.
It was well documented that players did a lot of running under Pochettino and Maresca appears to have taken a swipe at the Argentine with his latest comments when asked about his own coaching methods.
“Since day one, I don’t want the players to do things without them understanding why they do that so I don’t ask them just to run, I think it’s nice to help the players know why they do things,” he told reporters as cited on X.com.
The players certainly seem to be responding well to Maresca and his methods although the real test will be how they respond when they go through a difficult run of form, which will happen at some point this season.
Maresca certainly wasn’t high on people’s list to replace Pochettino and whilst there’s a long way to go before he can be considered anywhere near a success at Stamford Bridge, he’s made an impressive start to his Chelsea career.
