The spotlight shines brightest on the biggest players.
That has been true for Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, whose big-game credentials have been in question since his Tottenham Hotspur days…which let’s face it, might have been a bit harsh given the position of that club.
Bayern, though, considers itself second in stature to nobody in the footballing world. And club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen for one is not here to heap the pressure on their main man.
The Bayern boss fielded a question in a Sport Bild interview from September over whether Kane will be expected to score “more often” in big games this season compared to last — when he tucked away a penalty in the Champions League semifinal vs. Real Madrid. But Dreesen wasn’t about to take the bait.
“Harry Kane not only has 36 goals in the Bundesliga and eight in the Champions League and also provided a lot of assists,” Dreesen said in remarks captured by @iMiaSanMia. “He is a ‘360-degree striker’, someone who sees his teammates and is not an egomaniac who just waits for the ball up front. He tracks back and is very helpful to the team. Harry Kane is one of the best strikers of his time. Of course he didn’t have his best form in the final phase of the season and against Real. But at that point he already had back problems, so he was subbed off and then missed the last two games of the season due to injury. I’m sure that a fit Harry Kane will score a few very important goals for us this season. Nobody is hungrier for a title than Harry Kane.”
Now that is how you back a player.
