Cristian Romero has quickly become one of the most prominent centre-backs in the Premier League.
Now in his third year in England, the Argentine is already being linked with a move away. However, he recently faced criticism amid a strong wave of praise.
Jamie Carragher slams Cristian Romero
Jamie Carragher, in a recent appearance on The Overlap, was critical of Cristian Romero despite Tottenham’s impressive 3-0 win over Man United last week.
The criticism for the 2022 World Cup winner arrives at a surprising moment. The 26-year-old has otherwise been garnering plaudits from elsewhere and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent months.
“You look at the back four and you go they’re good players them. The right-back is alright, Udogie did really well last season. Romero is a World Cup winner and everyone things van de Ven is amazing, lightning quick, every time you watch him it’s ‘oh, he’s a brilliant player.
“I think Romero has been awful this season, but my point is that nothing really stands out at you going ‘oh that’s a nightmare,’ but they still concede lots of chances and lots of goals.”
Carragher on Romero, as quoted by LondonWorld.
Even though he is valued by Transfermarkt at €65 million, Spurs reportedly deem Romero worth £150 million.
The Argentina international has in place a £165k-per-week contract, which will keep him at Hotspur Way until June 2027.
Romero has played every minute of Premier League football so far this season.
No, Romero has not been bad
Romero may have a temperamental hiccup in him and he is part of a fatally flawed Tottenham setup, though it is hard to agree with Carragher here and consider his performances outright bad.
Looking at the bigger picture, Romero has only gone on and build upon his game at Tottenham ever since arriving from Atalanta.
And, as we have seen with the likes of Pepe and Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid, and Antonio Rüdiger at Chelsea and Real Madrid, being pugnacious alone does not make you a bad defender; in the right setup, every player can thrive.
