Bayern Munich youngster Paul Wanner is off to a fast start this season as a loan player at Heidenheim. This midweek it was another winner for the bright attacking midfielder, who bagged an 83rd minute goal in Heidenheim’s 2-1 Europa Conference League victory over Olimpija.
But Wanner’s international future still hangs in the balance.
It looks like Wanner is holding out some hope still for a Germany call-up under Julian Nagelsmann. But that did not happen in time for EURO 2024 and Austria stands at the ready to swoop in on the 18-year-old talent.
Sport1 had a recent report detailing the situation. As captured by @iMiaSanMia:
Paul Wanner’s national team decision depends on his big dream, the 2026 World Cup. If the DFB can show him this perspective and agree to it, Wanner will opt for the German national team. If not, things would look bad for the DFB. Because Austria and Ralf Rangnick, who would have liked to have called him up for the Euros, would assure him of that immediately. So the ball is now on the DFB and Julian Nagelsmann’s court
It’s still unclear whether Nagelsmann will call Wanner to the upcoming Nations League games in November. But that should happen next year at the latest. One competitive game would be enough to tie him to the respective nation. That’s another reason why Wanner wants to make the decision carefully
