Former Bayern Munich striker Sandro Wagner is enjoying a good spell as Julian Nagelsmann’s assistant coach with the Germany men’s national team.
So good, in fact, that his name keeps coming up in rumors about head coaching jobs at club level. But Wagner — who was current FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski’s deputy before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, but could not break into the senior national team for big tournaments — is not thinking about that. For now.
“These are things I have to ignore,” Wagner said in recent comments captured by Sky Sport DE (via @iMiaSanMia). “Of course you often have contacts here and there or talk to one person or another. But right now I have a great job that I’m enjoying. I’m not thinking too far into the future. I’m a young coach who wants to develop and I’m in a very good place right now with really great people.”
Wagner and Nagelsmann enjoyed an impressive, redemptive display for Germany at EURO 2024 and look set to be on hand once again at the next major tournament — the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup taking place in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. After that, who knows?
