Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been on the receiving end of ample criticism in the new season. The Argentine defender is generally reliable and yet is putting in sloppy performances every now and then.
Romero is an integral part of the Lilywhites squad, and therefore when he struggles, it reciprocates onto the team on the pitch. And that is something Spurs faithful will be concerned about.
Romero under fire after Spurs’ loss
Owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, John Wenham, has expressed his concern with Real Madrid-linked defender’s form this season. He insists that the majority of the goals that Ange Postecoglou’s side conceded have been owing to “mistakes” from the Argentine centre-defender.
The North Londoners have recently headed the headlines following their disastrous performance against Brighton at American Express Stadium, where the visitors let a 2-0 lead slip into a 3-2 defeat, and Wenham has expressed concern about one man in particular in the leaking Spurs defence.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Romero said:
“Romero was poor against Brighton. If you look at the goals we’ve conceded this season, quite a lot of them have come down to mistakes from Romero. Therefore, that is very concerning.
“During the first few games of the season, you can accept it, maybe there is a tiredness after the Copa America success in the summer.
“However, we’re into October now and he’s played quite a lot of games for Tottenham this season, yet we’re still seeing these same mistakes.”
Real Madrid rumors impacting Romero’s performance?
Romero has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, and the recent transfer speculation surrounding the Argentine could be a cause of effect for his poor performances. Maybe in his head, he already has a foot out of White Hart Lane.
The Argentine is the vice captain at Spurs, and as long as he remains at Hotspur Way, he has a responsibility to lead by example. And his focus should not be hindered owing to transfer speculations surrounding his future, as this tears apart the cohesion in the backline at N17.
Hopefully we see a better version of Romero after the ongoing international break.
