Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku put in an impressive performance for his country on Monday evening despite Belgium losing 2-1 to France.
The 22-year-old started on the right flank and gave Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne a lot of problems. Newspaper Het Nieuwsblad gave him an 8/10 rating and stated:
“Made the Heysel [Stadium] look like his playground like Eden Hazard used to do. Simply impressive how he gave Digne a horror night, especially before the break.”
Doku will certainly take the comparison to Chelsea legend Hazard but it wasn’t a perfect night from the City star, with Het Nieuwsblad also saying that his tracking back left a lot to be desired:
“The only downside: that he let Digne run too often – as with the disallowed 1-2 and the real 1-2.”
Doku is in excellent form at the moment
As we saw just before the international break with his goal in the 3-2 win over Fulham, the Belgian is high on confidence at the moment.
Manager Pep Guardiola will be keen to see Doku build on his recent performances when the Cityzens take on Wolves, Sparta Prague (in the Champions League), Southampton and Tottenham (in the Carabao Cup) before the end of the month.
There is competition for places on City’s left flank
Considering that Jack Grealish has also received plenty of praise recently, it will be interesting to find out who Guardiola favours on the left wing for the most important games.
Of course, due to the sheer number of matches being played, there will be a lot of rotation between Grealish and Doku anyway, and fans will be delighted that both are in the sort of form where they can make important contributions to the team in the final third of the pitch.
