You would be hard pressed to find someone who had a better day against the Netherlands than German national team newcomer Jamie Leweling.
A surprise starter, Leweling made the most of his opportunity by scoring the only goal in Germany’s 1-0 victory against the Netherlands.
“I found out this morning that I was starting. Of course I was nervous. But in the end it’s football, 11 against 11. On the pitch the nervousness was gone. I’m very happy,” Leweling told Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Half-Ghanian, Leweling could have chosen to represent his father’s homeland, but instead of heading toward a career of crushing the hopes of USMNT fans (as Ghana is wont to do) Leweling opted to play for Die Mannschaft.
When asked why he made the call, the answer was concise: “Quite simply because I was born and grew up here. I’m German.”
