According to a report by Florian Plettenberg on Sky Sports (via @iMiaSanMia), many at Bayern Munich expect this to be the last season of Thomas Müller at the club before he hangs up his boots for good. However, there is still a chance he might extend — IF he can stay fit, and if the player himself wants to continue.
So far, Müller has found it hard to get starts under Vincent Kompany, despite consistent contributions in terms of goals and assists. He is currently playing as a backup to Jamal Musiala, only starting against Eintracht Frankfurt because Musiala was injured. Would Müller extend if such circumstances continue? It seems unlikely, especially given that an extension would necessitate a salary reduction.
Still, it’s very early in the season, with plenty of time left for things to change. Thomas Müller already has three goals and three assists this season, the same as Jamal Musiala, in only 325 minutes of playing time. Should Vincent Kompany find more games for the 35-year-old to start, he may yet show his value.
