Chelsea have put together a really impressive squad which looks very deep now that there are so few injuries, and has a very low average age. But that won’t stop the sporting directors staying on the hunt for the best young talents around, and Jamie Gittens is a name we keep hearing being mentioned.
The most recent reports come from Bild, who claim that the Blues (along with Tottenham) are watching the English youngster making his breakthrough with Borussia Dortmund. We’d imagine there are a host of other sides doing the same. He’s got 4 goals and 3 assists in just 10 games this season, so it’s hard to imagine any scout not being super impressed.
Gittens set to stay in Germany – for now
These days we tend to assess all these rumours on how well the move would fit with our sporting director’s and their philosophy, and there’s no doubt this one ticks a lot of boxes. Still just 20 years old, English and super talents, Gittens certainly does that. His wages would be reasonable, and the upside is huge.
Given it’s Dortmund, there’s also a sense they’re willing to sell at the right price, and have likely already established an agreement with Gittens to let him go should a top side come calling. A €40m price has been mentioned in the past.
Nothing looks likely this season, so players like Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke have plenty of time to prove they should be our wide option for years to come. But they will be aware that it’s not just the players already at the club that they need to compete with.
There would still need to be some shuffling of the squad given how many attacking options we currently have, but a talent of this quality might be unmissable.
