Manuel Neuer might go down as the best goalkeeper of all time. He no doubtedly, changed the position and has had some of the most impressive match performances in history. However, Neuer has been on a decline over the past few seasons, and at his age, you can only last so long. Neuer’s contract expires in 2025, and it seems as though all parties would like at least another year. Could that change?
Neuer’s camp has stated he sees no reason to retire next summer, and will be keen on staying until 2026. It is clear that Neuer’s legacy has earned him a bit of flexibility in his performances, and a deep level of trust. However, football is a business and patience won’t last forever.
If Neuer’s play declines sharply, Bayern Munich won’t waste time in replacing him, although everyone involved wants to see Neuer continue at his best. Will Nübel get his chance with Bayern? It has been reported that Bayern are looking at several different options including Mike Maignan, Gregor Köbel, and future investments such as Jonas Urbig. SZ reports that Maignan is Bayern’s preferred option if they are going to invest in a new goalkeeper.
However, Sport Bild is reporting that a new deal for Neuer is a “formality” and that a deal could be done before the end of the calendar year (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):
Manuel Neuer’s contract extension is considered a formality within the club. The deal could be done by the end of this year, potentially during the winter break. Neuer currently earns around €20m (including bonuses). He’s expected to remain in the same wage category, but with a lower base salary and higher performance related bonuses – which is a common practice for Bayern when extending the contracts of club greats.
