On Wednesday night, Bayern Munich suffered a brutal 4-1 Champions League loss to Hansi Flick and his merry band of Barcelona players. After conceding an easy breakaway goal in the 1st minute, Bayern battled back and scored an equalizer in the 18th minute. After scoring two more goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half, Barcelona cruised to victory.
In recent years, tumultuous results have driven Bayern’s coaches, players, and management to provide individualistic, self-indulgent responses that contradicted each other. Max Eberl, Bayern’s director of sport, offered a more unified response after the Barcelona loss.
“We lost control of the game after half an hour,” Eberl said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “After the early goal we played impressive football for half an hour and deservedly equalized. After that there we didn’t do well. We have to learn from the defeat. We win together and lose together.”
These thoughts mirrored the postgame interviews from Vincent Kompany, Joshua Kimmich, and Manuel Neuer. If the club can stay aligned from top to bottom, then it’s a lot more likely that there is a happy ending at the road.
