Chelsea are looking to sign a new centre back, and they’re not thinking on a long term timescale. According to our writer Simon Phillips, who published an exclusive this week on the subject on his Substack, the Blues are looking to make major moves in “the upcoming two transfer windows.”
A new central defender is considered “a priority for the club,” and whether they arrive in January or next summer is still something that’s being considered.
Phillips writes that a long list of options has been whittled down a short list of the best options, and there’s a truly stunning name in consideration. Man City stalwart Ruben Dias has been one of the league’s best defenders since moving from Benfica, but is now considered at the very least a remote possibility for us.
A major part of that is the idea that Pep Guardiola’s future there is potentially no longer long term, and a number of their top stars could look to move on to find new challenges.
Dias the perfect player to instantly upgrade – but Chelsea won’t sign him
It’s hard to imagine a more clear cut, immediately upgrade that Chelsea could make to their current team than slotting the experienced Portugal international into their back line. He’s got everything they want, and everything the team is lacking in those positions now.
However, despite how much he would clearly upgrade our first team options, there are major issues with the move too. Dias, as a peak age, established superstar on top of the line wages, couldn’t be further from the model in terms of players Chelsea have been signing.
Maybe now things have settled down the sporting directors will allow themselves a little more leeway – but we can’t see it.
