Sporting Club de Portugal manager Ruben Amorim is seemingly closing in on being appointed at Manchester United, and that’s led to another wave of rumours about Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres.
German insider Florian Plettenberg claims that there is an “agreement” the striker can leave next summer for €60-70m. Chelsea, along with a host of other top teams, are named as interested parties.

But as it stands, it seems to us that Gyokeres has never been further from a move to Chelsea. And that’s not just because a manager he’s had a great time with is looking close to a Premier League move. It’s more to do with what’s happened at Chelsea over the last 6 months.
The Swedish striker is having yet another brilliant season in the Primeira Liga, bullying defenders domestically and in Europe, continuing to score bags of goals and look a cut above most of those he’s coming up against.
But that’s not proving anything he didn’t prove a year ago – and back then those in charge at Chelsea clearly decided that they weren’t sure Gyokeres would be able to perform the same way.
Jackson has proved what Gyokeres hasn’t yet
Meanwhile, what’s happened at Chelsea is the emergence of Nicolas Jackson, who just keeps getting better and better, and keeps validating the sporting directors’ decision to keep faith with him rather than spending big on a forward like Gyokeres.
If we decided that back in the summer, why would we change our mind now, after another couple of impressive months for Jackson? We could well see Gyokeres in the Premier League soon, but it won’t be at Chelsea, not unless something changes dramatically. Even Christopher Nkunku can’t get first team minutes right now – what hope would Gyokeres have?
