Manchester City have made Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz one of their top targets for the summer transfer window, according to TEAMtalk.
The website claims that the Premier League champions have started to “plot” a move for the German international as they look to revamp their squad.
They believe a £90m bid could be enough to secure Wirtz’s signature at the end of the season.
TEAMtalk report that there is a belief among City’s recruitment team that the 21-year-old would be a great fit for Pep Guardiola’s style of play.
Wirtz is not the only Bundesliga player being targeted
It is believed that the Cityzens are also keeping close tabs on Wirtz’s German international teammate Jamal Musiala.
Guardiola is known to be a keen admirer and scouts have been sent to watch the Bayern Munich playmaker on a number of occasions, but there are several obstacles stopping a move from happening.
TEAMtalk say Musiala would be “significantly more expensive” than Wirtz, and there is also interest from other clubs.
Chelsea are keen on the midfielder too. He came through the Blues’ academy and he reportedly still has many friends in London. With that being the case, it seems City will focus mostly on Wirtz.
City’s PSR hearing could scupper any transfer
The club’s summer plans are expected to be impacted if the Manchester side are found guilty of the 115 charges related to breaches of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.
A hearing in front of an independent tribunal started last month and the outcome may only be made public before Christmas. Until then, City’s transfer plans have been put on ice, but they are ready to swoop in for Wirtz next year if they are able to do so.
