Spurs currently occupy eighth place in the Premier League after a mixed start to the season. However, only Manchester City and Chelsea have scored more goals than Tottenham’s 18 so far. While inconsistency has been an issue, Ange Postecoglou appears to have found his footing with the squad and is optimistic about securing a top-five finish. To strengthen their midfield, a 23-year-old talent is expected to join Tottenham at the end of the season.
ABC Sevilla reports that Real Betis are confident that Spurs will sign the United States international before July 2025.
Tottenham agreed to a €25 million (£20.8 million) option to buy Cardoso as part of the deal that saw Giovani Lo Celso move to Real Betis for just £8.4 million in August. Spurs have until July 1, 2025, to activate this option, and sources within Real Betis believe that Tottenham’s acquisition of the 23-year-old defensive midfielder is already a finished conclusion.
Cardoso might be the missing piece
Carsado earning £11,711 per week, joined Betis at the beginning of this year, has made 30 appearances and excels in the traditional central defensive midfield role. While Postecoglou has a wealth of talented midfielders, none truly shine in the task of marshalling the midfield and maintaining composure like a conventional defensive midfielder. He made his debut for the US national team in 2020 at just 19 years old and has since appeared in 17 matches.
Tottenham’s midfield includes the likes of Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Yves Bissouma, all of whom are adept at carrying the ball and finishing but may not offer the defensive solidity that Carsado brings to the table.

Tottenham could finally secure the No. 6 that Postecoglou needs to unlock his more adventurous midfielders, providing Spurs with a hard worker who can effectively organise the midfield, much like Rodri does at Manchester City.
