For one who wasn’t in the original squad, Jarrod Bowen’s performance as an England substitute with his goal from his first touch and a ‘near assist’ if Dominic Solanke had been reading the same script was pretty impressive: Lee Carsley’s omission of the West Ham United‘ skipper would be the subject of more criticism had it not been the u21′ coaches’ last game in his caretaker role.
As it is, that goal for England has elevated Bowen into the membership of a very elite group, as it made him just the sixteenth player from West Ham to have scored for England. Some of the names are Hammers legends- Bobby Moore, (twice), Geoff Hurst (24) and Trevor Brooking (5) probably the best known.
Paul Goddard (1) and Matthew Upson (1) are certainly amongst the less well remembered Hammers Goal scorers for the Three Lions. Most recent of course was Declan Rice so we are all mighty relieved to have a new name as the ‘most recent’ goal scorer roll of honour.
