Julen Lopetegui addressed the media before West Ham United’s clash with Newcastle United on Monday night.
West Ham have made a terrible start to the 2024/25 season, and Julen Lopetegui is believed to be under real pressure right now.
It has been suggested that the Spaniard has just two games remaining to save his job – the upcoming clashes with Newcastle and Arsenal.
In my opinion, we will do well to get two points out of those games – I just don’t see how Lopetegui will turn things around, considering how off the pace his players have been this season.
That said, he does still have the full support of his players according to people inside the club.
I don’t believe that to be true – we can all see with our own eyes that the players aren’t performing to the best of their abilities.
However, Lopetegui seems to be oblivious to the extent of our problems right now.
Julen Lopetegui drops big hint after West Ham sack rumours
With the pressure continuing to build on Lopetegui’s shoulders, his days are surely numbered in East London.
The players have been so far off the pace and there have been no discernible patters of play on display.
It has been one bad performance after another from the Hammers this season.
However, Lopetegui clearly thinks he’s here to stay, judging by what he told WHUFC.com on Friday.
The Spaniard said, “It is true that none of us are happy with the position we’re in in the table, and living under pressure is normal in this line of work. The most important thing is that we’re pushing to improve, and I am confident that we have the players’ commitment to do this.“
“My focus is on the team, our daily work and how we can get better. We can only concentrate on the things we can control, and that’s what we’re going to do. The season finishes in May, not November, and I’m hopeful about what we can achieve going forward.“
Tell me that doesn’t sound like a man who has been told he will be in charge until the end of the season.
The thing is, if the Hammers lose our next two games convincingly, Lopetegui’s position will surely be untenable.
And if he’s kept in charge for the Leicester game, and we lose that as well, I don’t see a scenario where he can remain at the London Stadium.
In my opinion, Julen Lopetegui will not be West Ham manager beyond the end of the month.
It’s clear that he doesn’t share that opinion though.
