- Liverpool moved eight points clear at the top of the table with win at St Mary’s
- Mo Salah netted a double in the second half to secure dramatic comeback win
- Arne Slot does not believe his players will get carried away with being leaders
Arne Slot has dismissed the notion that Liverpool will get carried away with being eight points clear in the Premier League title race.
Mo Salah scored twice as the Reds fought from 2-1 down to beat a spirited Southampton side, who led after Mateus Fernandes and Adam Armstrong cancelled out Dominik Szoboszlai’s opener.
With Manchester City slumping, it means Liverpool have breathing space at the summit ahead of a titanic tussle between the two teams at Anfield on Sunday. But Slot says his team are keeping level headed.
‘It’s nice to have this position but we are definitely not getting carried away,’ he said. ‘We also know what he have to put into it to get these leads and these wins.
‘I think there were only maybe one or two games for us that were wins by a big margin but the rest were by a small margin, so we know how difficult it is to win a game.
‘These players have been longer in the Premier League than I have, but I think even later on in the season last season, Arsenal led by eight points and Manchester City still came back.

A second half brace from Mo Salah secured a dramatic 3-2 win over Southampton at St Mary’s
The Reds have built a significant gap over Man City who were hammered 4-0 by Tottenham on Saturday
‘You know if you face Arsenal, City, Chelsea and all these other teams that they are all able to win so many games in a row.‘
On Salah, Slot added: ‘We always know we can trust him if things are difficult for us because after we went 2-1 down, I didn’t really feel that was the moment we could score.
‘It was a fantastic pass from Ryan Gravenberch, and the timing of the run and how Mo finished it was special.
‘That helps you back in the game and we needed that goal to play the last 25 minutes we played because, for me, it was then a matter of time before we scored the third goal.‘
