Son Heung-min has entered the final year of his contract at Tottenham
There has been some speculation surrounding the future of Tottenham Hotspur skipper Son Heung-min in recent weeks.
The South Korean international is in the final year of his contract (Transfermarkt) at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The majority of the fanbase were expecting the club to offer the star forward a contract extension, but instead, reports suggest that Spurs have decided to activate the one-year option in his deal, thus extending his stay in North London to 2026.
Son Heung-min has had an injury-ridden start to the 2024/25 campaign that has seen him miss six matches so far in all competitions, though there is little to doubt about his qualities which are very much there for all to see. As such, he has delivered in the final third with three goals and four assists in 12 games.
Nonetheless, the chiefs at the Hotspur Way are being cautious about handing a big fat contract to their skipper, who will turn 33 in July. Now, former Tottenham manager David Pleat feels the end of the ongoing campaign will be the right time for the club to part ways with the South Asian superstar.
“To recognise the time when it’s time to go. It would be fascinating to see this season at the end, which has a few months to go, what Tottenham do with Son,” Pleat said on The Joy of Football podcast.
“There’s a lot of talk about him getting an extra year. But I just wonder whether, if they can agree it with another club, might be the best time to maximise on that. Just my opinion.”
Son continues to be one of Tottenham’s most valuable players, despite his advancing years and suggestions of a potential decline. The South Korean’s departure as a free agent would be detrimental for the club. He has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia next year, which could help the Lilywhites get a decent fee if a contract extension is triggered.
Solely from the club’s financial point-of-view, it will be a win-win situation. If the club are not willing to hand him a new contract but just trigger a 12-month extension, it would point towards preserving Son’s value and not risk him leaving on a free transfer.
