Germany is used to dominating Switzerland in women’s international football and this time was no different.
In a friendly match on Friday, the Germans sliced the opposition open to the tune of 6-0, bouncing back from a defeat to Australia last time out and setting up for a hopeful 2024 finale against Italy on Monday.
Switzerland managed to hold out for nearly a full half. Chelsea FC’s Sjoeke Nüsken glanced a corner from Bayern Munich’s Klara Bühl in the 44th minute to open the scoring.
In the second half, the floodgates opened. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Laura Freigang coolly tucked home first-time from a chipped ball over the top from club teammate Pia-Sophie Wolter in the 50th minute. In the 56th, Cora Zicai (SC Freiburg) found Bayern’s Lea Schüller for a point-blank header. Then in the 64th, Wolter slipped down the right flank and delivered a second perfect assist for Freigang, again hit first time.
It has been a breakout campaign for Freigang, who could be staking a strong claim to the XI under Christian Wück. The Wolter-Freigang combination worked again for Germany’s fifth, with the latter this time turning to provide the cross for Zicai to tuck home through the legs of a Swiss defender.
Freigang only came on as a half-time sub this time, but did not let up. In stoppage time, she won the ball out of Switzerland’s build-up right in front of goal and fed Vivien Endemann. The Wolfsburg forward clipped a cross to the back post for Schüller to collect her brace in emphatic fashion.
