Fabrizio Romano added a rather interesting clause to one of his exclusive videos for CaughtOffside recently claiming that Chelsea should be expecting an exciting end to the transfer window:
“Chelsea keep working for present and future on the market. It’s going to be a busy week for Chelsea for sure. The final one of January, but then it’s also important to remind what they are waiting for,” the transfer insider said, before going into detail on the positions we’re looking to strengthen.

But that busy final week cuts both ways, it seems. Simon Johnson’s final “Deal Sheet” of the window makes it clear that players could be outgoing too, when discussing the travails of moving on former Leicester players Ben Chilwell and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall:
“There have been no fresh enquiries for Chilwell or Dewsbury-Hall, but Chelsea expect things to change, because they have had the impression many clubs are leaving decisions to the final week of the window.”
Chelsea hold the cards – but are playing a dangerous game
That would explain the “phoney war” of this January so far. Despite the usual swirl of rumours, the Blues have so far concluded a rather disappointing two loan recalls and one loan out. Not exactly fireworks. We’re not expecting them to sign Kylian Mbappe here, just deal with some of the myriad players who want to leave, or some of the post
It does make sense that many of these moves are going to be opportunistic, and that to get the best price either buying or selling, waiting for other teams to get desperate while you hold the cards is probably the way to go.
Of course the risk is that they overplay their hands, and the likes of KDH, Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and numerous others are left stranded on our bench for another 6 months.
