Given the demands of modern day football, injuries are guaranteed for every team throughout the course of the season. While some players and clubs speak out against a fully stacked schedule, that seems to grow season upon season, the most proactive way to deal with injuries in the meantime may just be a deeper squad.
According to Sport Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund and board member for sport Max Eberl share the sentiment of depth as the pair prepare the squad for the upcoming season.
In their planning for next season, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund want a squad with two players for each position. If there’s a third one, then he’s a candidate for sale, that’s the case for Raphaël Guerreiro, for example. Alphonso Davies is the undisputed starter at left-back. The club is planning with Adam Aznou as his back-up in the future. Guerreiro, therefore, is a candidate for sale. Barcelona hold an interest in their former youth player Aznou.
If Raphaël Guerreiro, a player who offers depth in multiple positions, is being snubbed in favour of a younger prospect, then a player like Thomas Müller could also be in danger following the signing of Tom Bischof and the return of Paul Wanner, two young prospects who can both be deployed in der Raumdeuter’s position.
There is still a fair chunk of the season that needs to be played and anything could change in that time — take Leon Goretzka’s spectacular comeback into the starting line-up as an example. However, the summer transfer window could very well see Bayern getting rid of what it considered to be dead weight.
