Ange Postecoglou needs to turn the tide around as Tottenham face another defeat in the league
Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has come under a lot of scrutiny once again after his side’s 2-0 defeat against Fulham. Spurs came into the game after a positive result against AZ Alkmaar in the second leg of the Europa League Last 16. But the Lilywhites could not carry on their momentum and eventually faced a 15th league defeat of the season.
One step forward and two steps back, that has been the story of the season for Ange Postecoglou and his side. There was nothing to separate the two teams in the first half and Spurs fans were quite happy with the way the defence was set up. Tottenham also started the second half brightly after Ange made a few substitutions.
The North London club came close to scoring in the second half when James Maddison chested down a rebound and tried to set up Dominic Solanke. However, the Spurs striker failed to convert the chance from close range. But Fulham ended up taking the lead through Rodrigo Muniz, after a series of defensive errors by Tottenham players. The hosts then doubled their advantage through former Spurs player Ryan Sessegnon and finished the game off.
Ange Postecoglou talks about the penalty controversy
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou was seemed to be livid that his side were not awarded a penalty in their 2-0 defeat against Fulham. Spurs midfielder Lucas Bergvall was brought down in the box by Fulham’s Calvin Bassey, as the dedender put his body in front of the Spurs NO.15 and tripped the talented midfielder without touching the ball. But the incident was quickly cleared off by referee Andy Madley, as well as, the VAR.
As transcribed by Football.london, this is what Ange had to say regarding the incident,
“I’ll leave that to the officials but I will say that we don’t carry on like a lot of other clubs and I think that hurts us for sure. I don’t think there’s ever any noise around us and decisions. We get one slightly in our favour and there’s national headlines for a week. Things go against us and there’s not even a sentence on it.”

The game was still at 1-0 to Fulham when the incident occurred and had the penalty been given, the momentum of the game could have completely shifted. However, referee Andy Madley was not even called to the screen to check the incident.
As per Football.london, the VAR Paul Tierney explained why the penalty was not given. Tierney said,
“Bassey’s foot was in front of Bergvall’s and Bergvall’s gone into him rather than the other way around.”
With quite mixed views on this by both sets of fans, it felt like Spurs were harshly done. Any other day, and it would have been given as a penalty. But luck seemed to have run out for Ange and his players and it just wasn’t meant to be.
