There has been a need to bring in ceiling raisers in the current roster at Hotspur Way, with the Lilywhites looking to compound on their roster in the upcoming summer transfer window, and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Manchester City wide forward Jack Grealish.
Grealish is one of the players that has struggled to make a high-profile impact at Etihad Stadium this season, given how he has struggled to cut inwards from that wide receiver position and how the winger roles have evolved for the Manchester Blues this season, where Pep Guardiola has integrated flair and pace wingers on the touchlines.
Now this leaves an England international with beaming potential on the bench that is waiting, waiting for an opportunity to thrive again. And this has led to potential exit rumours for the former Aston Villa ace, who would be looking to find himself a new club in the upcoming summer transfer window, one where he can play regularly, and this is where Tottenham comes in…
Robinson likes the idea of Robinson at Tottenham
We have seen how Ange Postecoglou’s side has struggled to find solutions when facing a coached defensive unit, and this means that the Australian coach needs someone who can force solutions, and as Daniel Levy dips into the market to find that, they are met by a familiar face on the target list in Jack Grealish.
And former North Londoners goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks that bringing in the 29-year-old would end up being a marquee arrival at Hotspur Way, but then he goes on to insist on his doubts over whether Daniel Levy and the chiefs at N17 would go on to sanction a deal with such financial demands (this, in a sense, should not only be transfer fees but also his massive wage bill) to get their hands on Grealish.
Robinson went on to speak about how the silky forward is a surplus at City.
Speaking in an interview with Tottenham News, he said:
“I think Jack’s been talked about a lot regarding his future at Manchester City, along with others.
“You look at the potential rebuild that Pep’s already undertaken. You look at the money that they spent in January, the average age of that squad at Manchester City, and you can see the rebuild starting. And if Jack Grealish is to fall foul of that rejuvenation of the squad, he’s a player that any team would have.
“Would I welcome him at Tottenham? Absolutely, I’d welcome him at Tottenham. He’d be a marquee signing. He’d be a huge signing. Can I see Tottenham, one, stumping up the money? No. Stumping up the wages, either? No. I think there’ll be a lot of other suitors for Jack Grealish.
“I think goalposts and boundaries have to be moved at Tottenham if they are to bring in those types of quality players.”
Lets talk Maddison and Jack
But we know that the head coach likes his wingers rapid and ones that possess flair. Does this mean that Jack can be slotted into more of a midfield role – one that James Maddison operates in at the moment?
That being said, the former Foxes midfielder has struggled to put out exemplary performances this season, and if there is a chance that Grealish were to come to Tottenham, that would possibly lead to a tactical reshuffle that might end up costing James Maddison his place in the eleven.
In a sense, Tottenham fans could argue that this will bring competition and force James Maddison to get his game up and either go on to become a better player or risk losing his starting position. But then given his wages and his age, he would suddenly be thinking about minutes…
The question will then become: does this mean the end of Maddison at Tottenham?

See, if there are prospects of Grealish coming in and then thriving in that 8/10 role, it will suddenly see Maddison on the periphery (especially as we have seen how Ange likes to operate with one creative outlet and one supporter on either side of the midfield in a 4-3-3).
There is a sense in what Robinson says; despite his struggles, Grealish can bring much-needed creativity and flair to the side, and this will not make Maddison happy. But is it really about making one person happy or making a squad that can compete?
