Erik ten Hag has offered worrying injury news in regard to both Antony and Luke Shaw.
Manchester United secured their place in the top four by beating Chelsea last night, with Old Trafford buzzing to book their place in Europe’s premier competition once again.
However, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. It came at a cost. Antony and Luke Shaw both had to be substituted with injuries during the game. The former before the 30-minute mark. The latter at half-time.
Shaw’s problem was described as a ‘slight’ back injury. You get the impression that it was more of a precautionary move, rather than a longer term problem.
However, Antony’s injury looked far worse. The Brazilian looked in agony as he was down on the ground following the collision, while whenever he tried to put any weight on the ankle, the problem only seemed to worsen.
Now, Ten Hag has given an injury update on the duo, admitting he will not know the true extent of the problems for 24 hours. However, he did describe Antony’s injury as ‘serious’, which is not encouraging at all…
“It’s difficult to say. Let’s wait for 24 hours and then we’ll know more.” The gaffer is quoted as saying by ManUtd.com.
“I don’t know [about Antony]. Everyone has seen he came off. I can tell you it is serious but we have to wait a minimum [of] 24 hours, then we know probably more about the status of the injury.”
At this stage, it feels like Antony will not be fit for the FA Cup final in eight days’ time. This will be a huge blow for the Red Devils, with the ex-Ajax man locking down that right-wing spot for pretty much the whole season.
Although Antony’s output may not have shown up in the stat-sheet, United have looked like a far better team with the Brazilian in it. His work rate, pressing ability and sheer desire to win has helped United to some important victories over the course of this season.
Without him, against a side like Manchester City, it’s going to be a whole lot tougher.
Now Ten Hag has to work out who to give the minutes to over on that right-hand side. I’d assume Jadon Sancho is the current favourite for that slot. He actually looked pretty sharp out there against Chelsea.
