Bayern Munich confirmed another major change at the board level on Tuesday. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is back at Bayern after a two-year-long break. He was promoted to a place on the supervisory board on Tuesday.
Rummenigge has been working at the club in the CEO role for most of this century. He stepped down from this position two years ago. Oliver Kahn was appointed to succeed him, but things have not gone as per plan. Kahn was sacked from this position last week after a disappointing campaign for the first team.
Along with Kahn, Bayern also parted ways with sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. The Bavarian club has not announced a replacement for Salihamidzic. Jan-Christian Dressen has been promoted to the CEO role, replacing Kahn, after previously serving in the CFO role at Die Roten.
Rummenigge will have a big role to play at Bayern during the summer transfer window. In the absence of a sporting director, Rummenigge will advise the likes of Dressen and Hainer to complete key transfers. While talking to DPA on Wednesday (viaiMiaSanMia), Rummenigge also backed Thomas Tuchel to enjoy more success after winning the Bundesliga title.
“During my time in charge, I was very fortunate to have worked with many great coaches such as Louis van Gaal, Jupp Heynckes, Hansi Flick, Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti. I am convinced that Thomas Tuchel will be a very successful coach at Bayern.”
Tuchel was appointed as the new head coach of Bayern at the end of March. Die Roten decided to part ways with Julian Nagelsmann after inconsistent performances over the season. The defeat against Bayer Leverkusen before the international break in March was the final nail in the coffin for Nagelsmann.
Thomas Tuchel was without a role, so it was a straightforward choice for Die Roten. The German coach was linked with a move to Bayern in 2018, but a move never materialized. The club chiefs appointed Tuchel in the hope of going deep in all competitions.
Unfortunately, Tuchel couldn’t guide Die Roten beyond the quarter-finals in the Champions League and DFB Pokal. Manchester City got the better of Bayern in the European competition, while Freiburg clinched a historic win in the domestic cup competition.

Die Roten also struggled in the Bundesliga during the run-in. The second half collapses against Mainz and RB Leipzig saw them surrender the advantage in the title race to Dortmund. Tuchel will be pleased with how things panned out in the Bundesliga on the final matchday, but he will need to step up next season to achieve more success at Die Roten. The German coach will need a deep run in the Champions League as Rekordmeister has struggled to go past the quarter-final stage in the last three seasons.
