Man United may dip their toes into the goalkeeper market during this summer transfer window.
The general consensus among supporters is that David de Gea is no longer good enough. The Spaniard has made some pretty big errors this season.
The most concerning aspect is the inability to play out from the back. That said, De Gea is looking set to sign a new deal in Manchester, albeit on reduced terms, with no guarantee of the starting job.
Many thought Dean Henderson would challenge De Gea for starts. That does not look to be the case, with Hendo all set to secure a permanent switch to Nottingham Forest.
All that information is once again detailed in a recent ESPN post about United’s goalkeeper situation. However, they also state that United ‘may look’ to sign a goalkeeper this summer.
They actually name two players as potential targets; Diogo Costa and David Raya.
Although Ten Hag wants De Gea to stay, he’ll have no guarantees about playing time. The issue could come in regard to transfer budget, with it not clear how far the money will stretch after signing a midfielder and a striker.
Both Costa and Raya have had brilliant seasons for Porto and Brentford respectively. Their biggest selling point is the ability to play out from the back with their feet. It seems pretty clear that’s what Ten Hag requires from his number one.
Either player would not come cheaply. Costa seems settled at Porto, whereas Brentford are under no real pressure to cash in on Raya unless the price is right.
De Gea has been a wonderful servant to United, though both Costa and Raya represent definitive upgrades on the ex-Atletico Madrid man. Dare I say a new ball-playing keeper is more important than a striker? Possibly…
