Man United are working hard behind the scenes, getting ready to make their first offer for Mason Mount.
Manchester United Football Club have a chance to close the gap on Manchester City during this transfer window. They just have to back their manager, with Erik ten Hag tasked with spending those funds wisely.
Mason Mount is one name that the Red Devils are clearly keen on signing. He has been heavily linked with a transfer to Old Trafford this summer.
The Englishman has just one year left on his Chelsea deal, with the London club seemingly ready to cash in, so they don’t lose their homegrown hero for free in twelve months’ time.
Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest update on Mount’s future over the last few hours. He believes United are ‘preparing’ their ‘opening bid’ to sign the 24-year-old, with the main issue remaining Chelsea’s asking price. They want about £70m if you believe prior reports.
United remain ‘calm’ about the deal at present, with Mount ‘keen’ on the move.
The transfer fee has always felt like the problem here. Chelsea will demand a huge sum of money, purely because he’d be moving to a Premier League rival in this instance.
It’s up to United to play it smartly. Do not overpay for Mount as he’d be available for free in twelve months’ time. It’d also set a bad precedent for the rest of the window if they were to overspend here.
That said, Mount feels like the ideal stylistic fit for the way Ten Hag wants to play. He works hard on both sides of the ball, is energetic, is a good presser and he has underrated abilities in the final third.
