Man United could move for Denzel Dumfries, as they look to continue to overhaul the playing squad.
Erik ten Hag needs money to spend this summer, in order to ensure Manchester United keep progressing in the right direction.
Several positions in the squad could do with some extra work, though perhaps there’s too much to undertake in one window.
The right-back position is still up for debate. Diogo Dalot has just signed a new contract, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s end-of-season form offered some hope.
However, in a lengthy article by The Athletic, right-back gets a mention, namely, Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.
Apparently, United have identified the 27-year-old as a possible right-back upgrade. The player presents the ‘most compelling’ case this summer.
United scout reports rate his ‘intelligence’ and ‘athleticism’ highly, while the Dutchman could be available for just £35million.
The Dutchman has been linked with United before, while it does make sense as Ten Hag has shown a preference for moving for players he knows well (from his time over in the Netherlands).
Dumfries is an interesting one. Whenever I’ve watched him, he can blow hot and cold. His highs are super high while the lows can be pretty disastrous.
Whether he’s an upgrade on Wan-Bissaka is a weird one. Mobility-wise and in the final third, Dumfries is superior. However, defensively, particularly positioning and tackling, it’s a downgrade.
During this summer, I’d imagine there are other pressing needs in the squad that need sorting first, including the goalkeeper, striker and central midfield spots. However, if Dumfries is who Ten Hag wants to bring in, then we have to back the manager.
