Man United are interested in signing David Raya, though Brentford’s asking price could become a problem.
The goalkeeper position is quickly becoming a problem for Manchester United. Erik ten Hag still wants to keep David de Gea around at Old Trafford, though he’ll have no guarantees about playing time – which is a first since his arrival ten years ago.
After some poor displays towards the season’s end, links to a new shot-stopper were inevitable. Diogo Costa seems to be the number one target, though Brentford’s David Raya is also an option.
The Spaniard has had an excellent season for Brentford, proving his worth as a top tier Premier League goalkeeper – though he will not come cheap.
So-much-so that United are ‘reluctant’ to pay the £40m asking price Brentford have set for the 27-year-old. That’s according to Sky Sports News, who also state that Tottenham Hotspur are also in the same position.
Neither United nor Spurs believe Raya is worth that amount due to the fact he has just one year left on his deal. Meaning, in twelve months’ time, he’d be available for free. As a result, Brentford have received ‘no contact’ from prospective buyers.
Brentford, in the past, have shown they’re capable of standing their ground in the transfer market. We should expect no different here, meaning United will either have to pay up – or look at other targets.
In terms of stylistic fit, Raya would be perfect. He’s great with the ball at feet, meaning he’d help United out when playing out from the back. However, with a likely limited budget due to the ownership status of the club being up in the air, perhaps it’s not wise to spend £40m on a goalkeeper.
