Man United were keen on acquiring William Saliba from Arsenal this summer.
Manchester United are seemingly looking to freshen up their defence ahead of the new season, with Harry Maguire falling down the pecking order.
It’s believed the Englishman could want to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford, though in the event he leaves, Erik ten Hag has a plan to sign a defender in place.
Kim Min-jae is the name most-linked, though over the last 24 hours, an interesting rumour came to light.
It’s RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins with the claim, who stated that United had eyes on William Saliba.
Apparently, United ‘were interested’ in signing the 22-year-old defender from Premier League rival Arsenal. However, that deal now looks unlikely, with the Frenchman set to sign a new contract with the North London club.
Saliba enjoyed an excellent 2022/23 campaign before injury struck, though it looks as though the centre-back will commit the next five years of his career to Arsenal.
Although Saliba was always an unlikely capture for United, it does reaffirm the belief that Ten Hag wants to bring in another centre-half of some description.
The problem for United is that there are still many holes in the squad. Perhaps too many to fill in one window. In our opinion, centre-half is probably quite far down that list, with a new striker, goalkeeper and midfielder all far more pressing.
Perhaps this was just paper talk, throwing United’s name into the mix always brings a few more clicks, as it did feel unlikely that this move would ever be a possibility.
