Man United are once again looking at Yann Sommer as a potential option for the goalkeeper position.
David de Gea is becoming problematic. The game has moved on, highlighting the Spaniard’s weaknesses.
Erik ten Hag will know this more than anyone, hence, the club is at least looking at signing a new shot-stopper sooner rather than later.
De Gea will be kept on as number one, assuming the club signs off on a new contract that has already been agreed. However, the Red Devils want to at least provide some competition for the ex-Atletico Madrid man.
One man who the Red Devils have been linked with previously is Yann Sommer. The Switzerland international eventually ended up at Bayern Munich.
Now, talkSPORT have provided the latest on a potential Reds move to sign Sommer. They’re stating that United are ‘ready to revive’ their interest in the 34-year-old shot-stopper.
Sommer has been on United’s radar since last summer and he fits the player profile that Ten Hag is keen to recruit.
The player himself is ‘ready to quit’ his current club, Bayern Munich, unless he is given guarantees over playing time, ahead of Manuel Neuer. Sommer is also a cheaper alternative to the likes of Jordan Pickford and Andre Onana, both of whom have been linked with an Old Trafford switch recently.
If Ten Hag is set on finding competition for De Gea, a move for Sommer feels like an astute piece of business. He’d be relatively inexpensive, whereas United would have to spend big in order to sign a full-on De Gea replacement.
It’d also allow the large majority of the budget to be spent in other areas of the field, including a new striker.
