Man United have seen their initial Mason Mount offer turned down by Chelsea.
Over the last couple of weeks, Manchester United interest in Chelsea’s Mason Mount has come to light.
The Englishman is seemingly atop Erik ten Hag’s wishlist, with the Red Devils boss looking to invest in the midfield during this summer transfer window.
Unlike in years gone by, the Old Trafford side are moving pretty quickly here. They’ve already made a bid for Mount. However, United have seen their opening offer for the 24-year-old rejected, according to The Telegraph.
That figure stood at £40m, though Chelsea immediately turned down that bid, as they look to keep ahold of Mount.
The good news? United remain ‘confident’ that Mount will not sign a new contract with Chelsea. His current terms expire next year, leaving Chelsea with a real decision to make.
United’s official offer fell ‘well short’ of what Chelsea want, with the London club placing a £70m price tag on Mount, despite the fact he only has twelve months left on his contract.
Mount’s reluctance to commit to Chelsea is not to do with finances, rather the lack of Champions League football coupled with a lack of guaranteed playing time. No doubt his minutes would drastically increase in Manchester.
Chelsea’s new head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, had been ‘desperate’ to keep Mount, though it’s now unclear whether the Argentine wants to work with a player who could possibly leave for free next summer.
Although it’s not clear if (or when) United will make another offer, our opinion is that it will come soon. Mount is a direct upgrade on what the Reds have in that area of the field, so I’d expect the clubs to find some common ground when it comes to transfer fee.
