This summer, Manchester United’s biggest need was staring us all in the face. The Red Devils are absolutely desperate for an elite-level striker, who can guarantee goals on a game-by-game basis.
What’s also been obvious from the early stages is the fact that Harry Kane is the number one target. The Englishman has just a year left on contract at Tottenham Hotspur, while so far, he’s refusing to commit to a new deal.
Negotiating with Tottenham Hotspur is never easy at the best of times. Credit where it’s due, Daniel Levy is a pro when it comes to selling. Sadly, that comes at a great cost for United.
It’s The Guardian, with the latest information. The usually reliable Jamie Jackson goes big, claiming that United ‘have ended’ their interest in signing the 29-year-old, due to Tottenham’s unrealistic asking price.
The Englishman, who is of incredible value to Spurs, was going to cost somewhere around the £100m mark. Considering he’s available on a free transfer next summer, I can see why United are refusing to pay up.
It comes down to what other options are out there. If Ten Hag thinks there are players who could be just as Kane, while offering more longevity, at a cheaper price, it makes sense to at least explore those. Rasmus Hojlund is a name that’s poping up quite often.
The young striker may not have the same initial impact that Kane would, though he could easily be our striker for the next decade, at half the price it would cost to sign the Englishman.
Don’t forget that there’s also a possibility of signing Kane next summer. Free of a transfer fee. Yes, they’ll be more interested parties, but it’d still be worth looking at moving for him then.
