Alejandro Garnacho has made his Argentina debut, after what feels like multiple attempts.
Manchester United Football Club have been drip-feeding opportunities to Alejandro Garnacho over the last twelve months, following an FA Youth Cup final win a little over a year ago.
I think it’s fair to say that the winger has been one of many bright sparks during an interesting debut season under Erik ten Hag. The attacker has dazzled, largely off the substitutes bench, playing with a real maturity beyond his years.
It has been super refreshing to see the young man play without fear. He’s performed freely off that left-hand side, looking like a genuine problem for defences – particularly late on in games when they’re tiring.
After several international doors were closed for Garnacho recently (United commitments and injuries), the 18-year-old was finally given his first full Argentina international call-up over the last week or so.
Today, Garnacho was spotted coming on for his national team debut, wearing the number 28 jersey for his country.
The attacker came on in the 74th minute, during Argentina’s 2-0 win over Australia. As per usual, he looked threatening whenever he was on the ball, though the game was already won, so chances were somewhat limited.
No doubt Garnacho is hoping this is the first of many national team appearances over the next decade-plus. He’s obviously an immensely talented young man with the footballing world at his feet.
This is just another positive achievement for Garnacho over a crazy year. It’s now about ensuring his feet remain firmly on the ground. We’ve seen so many players earn fame too quickly, thus, performances take a downturn as a result. Hopefully, Ten Hag will not allow that to happen.
Argentina play one more game against Indonesia on Monday. Then, hopefully, Garnacho will get some well-earned rest before pre-season.
