Man United are looking to sign Theo Hernandez from AC Milan.
It’s fair to say a left-back isn’t really among Manchester United’s top needs going into the summer. Luke Shaw looked superb under Erik ten Hag, while Tyrell Malacia did a steady job as his understudy.
That isn’t stopping the club from potentially looking to upgrade in that area, though. It’s Gazzetta dello Sport (Friday print edition) via Sport Witness with the claim.
They link United with a move to sign AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez. According to the report, United are ‘pressing’ to sign the 25-year-old full-back, as United look to ‘bridge the gap’ between themselves and City.
In terms of transfer fee, it’s going to take a big-money offer. AC Milan want at least £50m (€60m) to part with one of their prized assets during this window.
Obviously, that’s a vast sum of money for a position where United are largely well-stocked. I guess the black and white of it is that any upgrade is a step in the right direction, though I cannot help but feel this money would be better spent elsewhere during this window.
With a budget of around £100m, give or take a little bit, it doesn’t feel wise splashing half of that on a left-back.
In terms of fit, there’s no doubting that Hernandez is perfectly in line with what Ten Hag wants from his left-back – on both sides of the ball. He’s a tactically astute, intelligent footballer who can bomb up and down that flank all game long.
That said, I don’t think Shaw is a million miles away from Hernandez when both players are at their peak.
