Man United have made a second bid to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea.
Manchester United’s intention to sign Mason Mount is pretty clear. The Red Devils made a bid last week, which was instantly rejected by the Stamford Bridge club.
With one year left on Mount’s deal, it always felt like Chelsea would have to cave in and sell Mount this summer, in order to ensure they do not lose him for nothing in twelve months’ time. As a result, a second United offer felt likely.
Well, that time has come, according to The Athletic (subscription required). United have made an ‘improved’ offer to sign the 24-year-old, worth around £45m up front, with a further £5m in add-ons and bonuses.
Sadly, that offer has been rejected, with Chelsea counter-offering £60m plus £5m in add-ons. That means the sides are about £20m apart.
David Ornstein writes that an agreement is ‘edging closer’, though a deal is not quite yet in place.
As things stand, it does sound like United are prepared to go back in with another bid, though they’ll have a price which they will not exceed. It feels like we’re getting somewhat close to that point.
Middle-ground has to be found here. Chelsea will hold out for every single penny they can get, particularly from a Premier League rival. Couple that with United’s struggles in the transfer market and I reckon the Reds will end up overpaying by about £10-15m…
It’s now just a waiting game. I’d imagine it’ll be another few days before a third bid goes in.
It’s also intriguing to read that Chelsea will look to accommodate the wishes of Mount, as he has been a top-class servant to their club. Hopefully, that means a deal will be agreed soon.
