Man United are said to be ahead in the race to sign Axel Disasi, with Erik ten Hag set to talk to the player soon.
Although Manchester United’s back line improved drastically during the 2022/23 season, the Red Devils could look to move for a new centre-half.
Harry Maguire could well leave, as the Englishman doesn’t really fit in line with Erik ten Hag’s way of playing. That paves the way for a new third or fourth-choice option to come in.
Among the names linked with filling that void is AS Monaco’s Axel Disasi. The Frenchman enjoyed an excellent season in Ligue 1, with some elite teams starting to take note.
Journalist Fabrice Hawkins provided an update on that front via Twitter yesterday. He stated that Ten Hag is set to talk to the player shortly, presumably about a potential move.
In terms of transfer fee, AS Monaco will start negotiations at around the £35m mark (€40m).
The 20-time Premier League champions will face competition from Arsenal and Chelsea for any Disasi move, though United are currently said to be ahead in the race to sign the 25-year-old.
It’s clear that the club want to bring in another defender who is comfortable with the ball at feet. It’s easy to see why if you watched United last season. Time and time again, possession was given up far too cheaply – starting with the goalkeeper and back line.
One of Diasi’s great strengths is his calmness with the ball at feet, and his ability to influence the game in an attacking sense.
These players do not come cheap in the modern-day market. You can tack on an extra few million quid when United show an interest, too.
It remains to be seen whether United will firm up their interest with an official bid.
