Man United have held a meeting with the agent of Andre Onana, in case David de Gea leaves.
Manchester United Football Club could well be in the hunt for a new goalkeeper this summer. David de Gea’s future is up in the air, somewhat intriguingly.
At first, it felt like the Spaniard was all set to sign new terms here in Manchester. However, he may be having second thoughts.
In the event he does leave, United will need a new number one goalkeeper. Several names have been linked. Perhaps none more so than Andre Onana.
Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the future of Onana – and it’s quite a pivotal one. He believes the 27-year-old’s agent, Albert Botines, has held a ‘direct meeting’ with United on Thursday.
According to Romano, United are approaching goalkeepers to explore their options in case De Gea leaves, though they’re still waiting for a final decision from their current number one.
In terms of asking price, Onana will cost £42m (€50m) minimum, with add-ons on top of that.
In terms of stylistic fit, it doesn’t get any better than Onana. The man from Cameroon is super composed with the ball at feet. Just watch his Champions League performance back, it was excellent, and under such pressure, too.
At this moment in time, I’d argue a top tier goalkeeper is United’s biggest need. The Red Devils absolutely need that man who can come in and take complete control of the penalty area. It’d lead to the Red Devils having so much controlled possession in matches, which is key to winning any close game.
Onana has also worked with Ten Hag previously at Ajax, meaning he’d know exactly what would be asked of him from day one.
