Man United are now in the hunt to sign Andre Onana, as David de Gea is increasingly likely to leave the club.
Manchester United’s goalkeeper situation is suddenly up in the air. The Red Devils initially expected David de Gea to stay and pencil new terms in Manchester. However, that situation is changing.
According to 90min.com, De Gea is now ‘increasingly likely’ to leave when his contract expires at the end of June. As a result, the Red Devils have eyes on ex-Ajax and current Inter Milan man, Andre Onana.
It’s stated that United are possibly going to be ‘pursuing a move’ to sign the 27-year-old shot-stopper.
Onana enjoyed an excellent season with Inter, which was only his first campaign in Italy for the Serie A club. Now, sources have revealed to 90min.com that the club have held talks with the player’s camp in ‘recent days’.
United have also been in contact with Inter, learning it’d take a total fee of about £51m (€60m), to sign him this summer.
That’s quite the asking price for a goalkeeper, though Onana could completely transform the way United play. The Red Devils would enjoy so much possession with a keeper who is good with the ball at feet. He also has a great command of his penalty area. Yes, you’d lose some of the shot-stopping ability, but you’d likely concede fewer chances if you’re seeing more of the ball.
Onana is the ideal fit. He’s worked with Erik ten Hag before at Ajax, meaning it’d take less time for him to seamlessly slot into this system. Hopefully, a deal can be completed soon, in order to give the man from Cameroon a full pre-season with his new teammates.
