Man United have eyes on Everton’s midfielder, Amadou Onana.
Manchester United Football Club need a midfielder this summer. That much is obvious. Mason Mount is 100% the main target, though a deal to sign the Englishman could now be dead in the water.
The Red Devils do not want to overpay for the Englishman, who has just one year left on his contract. He’d be available for free next summer.
Several other names will be linked with an Old Trafford switch as a result. The latest? Amadou Onana.
The man from Senegal was almost relegated with Everton this term, though Sean Dyche managed to guide his side to safety. That may not save Onana’s future at Goodison Park, though.
According to the usually reliable David Ornstein, the 21-year-old midfielder is ‘on the list’ for United, with the club ‘considering’ making a move for him.
Check out what David Ornstein had to say in full here:
“You’ve got Manchester United as well, who want a midfielder, though as far as we know, they’re focused on the more advanced one in Mason Mount at this point in time and the number nine.” Ornstein said on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE YouTube channel.
“They are looking at the other positions and you’ll have seen reports about Onana and Everton, I’m led to believe he’s on the list. Like many, he’s one of many options they’re considering.”
It seems clear that Ten Hag is after a mobile midfielder, who can add some energy to the current squad. Onana and Mount both thrive in that box-to-box role. Both have an impact in the attacking and defensive phases of play.
Onana is younger, though naturally less experienced than Mount. However, he had an impressive 2022/23 campaign from a personal standpoint – including putting in an excellent performance against United.
If the price is right, I think I’d prefer a move for Onana over Mount. He’s younger and coming off a better personal campaign. He’d also likely be somewhat cheaper, which is mad to think about given Mount’s contract situation.
