Erik ten Hag is behind Man United’s U-turn on David de Gea’s contract.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has some huge decisions to make this summer. It’s fair to say he’s not scared of making the difficult choice.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit proves that there is no longer a free ride for any player at Old Trafford. Now, David de Gea is the latest to feel that.
Talks over a new contract were progressing well before the season ended. It looked for all the world like the Spaniard was going to stay, albeit on reduced terms.
However, plenty has changed since then. Seemingly the gaffer has had a change of heart. While speaking to The United Stand YouTube channel, the Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler has provided another update.
Apparently, Ten Hag expressed concerns about keeping the 32-year-old as his number one beyond this summer. Then, he ‘effectively vetoed’ the new contract that was on the table for the player.
United have their say on any given contract, before Ten Hag weighs in. In this instance, it looks as though the gaffer has had his way.
Wheeler still believes that De Gea staying is still a possibility, though not as number one goalie. Ten Hag wants someone new to start in between the sticks for next season.
Again, it just shows that nobody is safe, no matter how comfortable you become. De Gea has been a tremendous servant for this club, though it’s fair to say his performances haven’t been as good recently. United will not stand for that drop-off under Ten Hag.
In terms of options, David Raya is a possibility, though Andre Onana feels like the most obvious target right now.
