Inter Milan’s Andre Onana is Man United’s number one choice to replace David de Gea in between the sticks.
Manchester United’s goalkeeper situation has taken a turn over the last few weeks. David de Gea looked all set to commit his future to the Old Trafford club with a new long-term deal. However, all went quiet on that front after initial positivity.
We’re now just hours away from De Gea being able to leave on a free transfer, having his pick of no doubt numerous clubs that’d offer him a contract.
For United, it means the search for a new first-choice goalkeeper, rather than looking to bring in a back-up. Several names have been linked with filling the void, including Andre Onana.
Now, talkSPORT have provided the latest on the man from Cameroon, claiming that the 27-year-old is ’emerging’ as United’s ‘top target’ in the hunt to replace De Gea as the number one.
Onana has worked with Ten Hag previously at Ajax, meaning the shot-stopper should be able to fit seamlessly into the system here at Old Trafford.
More than anything, it’s about Onana’s ability with the ball at feet. We witnessed it in the Champions League final, he was super calm under the highest pressure, passing out accurately and allowing Inter more possession.
We’re desperate for that at the Theatre of Dreams, rather than just aimlessly booting the ball back to our opponents.
Onana will also bring more command of his penalty area to the table. For far too many years, De Gea has been far too sheepish in that field, making it tougher on his defence to succeed.
In terms of price, you’d imagine it’s going to take somewhere around the £50m mark to get this deal done which obviously isn’t cheap. However, needs must.
