Man United are now finding it harder to sell Harry Maguire, due to a wage increase.
Manchester United Football Club have been pretty good in the buying market under Erik ten Hag, with the Red Devils making some astute signings.
However, they’ve still struggled in the selling department. Those problems date back many years, due to the club overpaying players who do not deserve huge wages. As a result, those footballers are happy to sit on their small fortunes at Old Trafford, without being tasked with playing.
That problem is seemingly striking United again this summer, with Harry Maguire the latest to benefit.
According to The Guardian, United’s task of selling the out-of-favour star is made ‘more challenging’ by Maguire’s recent wage increase. The Englishman has seen a bump up in pay due to United qualifying for the Champions League.
Ten Hag is trying to raise the necessary funds to sign both a goalkeeper and striker this summer, with Maguire identified as a player who could be sold for a decent transfer fee. However, clubs are being put off by this new bump in wage that the Englishman has enjoyed.
Despite losing his first-choice status, Maguire is now weighing up the prospect of taking less money but an increase in football elsewhere, against the big money he’s earning in Manchester.
Right now, you get the impression that Maguire is content to sit in as that third or fourth choice centre-half, in behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
As fans, we may not like Maguire’s decision to stay, but the fault is with the club. They’re paying an astronomical wage to a player who probably hasn’t justified it over the last few years.
Maguire still has a couple of seasons left on contract, too, so the club may find themselves in this same predicament next summer.
