Man United are closing in on agreeing a deal with Inter Milan, to sign Andre Onana.
A new goalkeeper seems to be the priority number one for Manchester United right now. The Red Devils are looking to replace David de Gea, who left upon the expiry of his contract.
The Spaniard, albeit a wonderful servant to this club, hasn’t adapted to this Erik ten Hag style of play. Eventually, the inability to play out from the back is what cost him his place at Old Trafford.
Andre Onana has been heavily linked as the man who’ll be tasked with filling that void, though agreeing a fee with Inter Milan is proving somewhat difficult.
Dutch journalist, Miek Verweij, has provided an update on the Onana situation. He took to Twitter to confirm that United are ‘very close’ to agreeing a deal with Inter.
On top of that, United have agreed to terms with Onana in ‘outline’, with a five-year (or 4+1) contract on the table.
Onana had a stunning year at Inter Milan, though the Serie A club need to sell some players in order to raise funds due to the lack of Champions League football on the table.
It does seem like Onana wants this move to happen, which would see him reunite with Erik ten Hag. The pair previously worked together at Ajax, with both enjoying great success over in the Netherlands.
The main point of order here is that United want a goalkeeper who can play out from the back. Onana excels in that aspect, while he also displays genuine command of his penalty area.
Although a pretty expensive deal, it’s exactly what United need to take their game to the next level. Immediately, this will bring more possession and control on matches for the Red Devils, which can only be a positive step in the long-term.
Let’s hope a deal doesn’t take too long to finalise.
