Man United are set to sign Andre Onana at some point this week.
Manchester United Football Club have confirmed that David de Gea has left on a free transfer, after a decade-plus of incredible service.
The Spaniard will go down as one of the best-ever goalies that Old Trafford has ever had the pleasure of supporting. His legacy will forever be etched in my memory.
However, there’s no room for sentiment in football. United and Erik ten Hag have to move on quickly, and sign the man who’ll replace the 32-year-old as soon as possible.
Well, to their credit, the Reds are moving quickly. Journalist Sam Pilger has provided a major update on United’s move for Andre Onana.
According to Pilger, United are set to confirm the new signing ‘within days’, as the club close in on their second major transfer following the addition of Mason Mount last week.
The Inter Milan shot-stopper has been the subject of serious interest for a few weeks now, with United seemingly agreeing a fee with the Serie A club over the sale.
Onana is super comfortable with the ball at feet, meaning United should see their possession stats go up in 2023/24. He’s also got a brilliant command of his penalty area – which is another De Gea weakness.
Suddenly, United are operating like a big club again. For years, the Reds have wasted time early on in the transfer market, then rushing when it comes to mid-August as time is running down. This year, they’ve identified and acquired two major players before pre-season has officially kicked off. They deserve credit for that.
The Reds’ first tour game takes place on Wednesday. I do not think Onana will be in place in time for that one. However, I cannot imagine we’ll be waiting for too long after that.
