Donny van de Beek is looking set to seal a Man United exit this summer.
Manchester United have been undergoing major change both on and off the field over the last year. Club ownership remains up in the air, while Erik ten Hag continues to mould this squad into one that fits his image.
When the Dutch gaffer took charge, I immediately assumed that the biggest benefactor would be Donny van de Beek. The pair worked together with great success at Ajax.
However, Van de Beek’s struggles continued last term, culminating in a season-ending injury back in January. The midfielder just hasn’t been able to catch a break.
A change of scenery for Van de Beek could now be close. Fabrizio Romano provided an update on his future yesterday, claiming that that 26-year-old United player is ‘exploring options’ to find a new club this summer.
According to Romano, this was ‘expected’, while it doesn’t look like AS Roma will be his destination, with ‘no contacts’ taking place right now.
This was always likely. Van de Beek is not a bad player. Far from it, in fact. However, he’s just not been able to catch a break in Manchester.
A change in scenery and a refresh in surroundings could absolutely huge for Van de Beek. He deserves that opportunity while he’s still in his prime years as a player.
Although he’s never looked quite ready for the bright lights at Old Trafford, I fully expect Van de Beek to rediscover his best form, wherever he ends up.
Hopefully, a deal can be agreed to fairly soon, in order to allow all parties to move on before the 2023/24 season kicks off.
