Man United have welcomed Anthony Martial back to training following injury.
Manchester United Football Club have made a positive start to pre-season. Three games, three wins for Erik ten Hag’s men. More than anything, though, it’s about building the fitness levels.
This squad wants to be challenging for major honours this season. I genuinely believe United could be Manchester City’s closest title challengers in 2023/24. However, to do that, they need a reliable goal scorer up front.
United have been linked with many strikers already this window, though it’s easy to forget that Anthony Martial remains at the club. He, typically, missed the end of the campaign with injury. We’re yet to see him play this pre-season due to the same problem.
However, he’s working his way back. United received the injury boost, with Ten Hag confirming that the important man is back in team training and working towards his return. Obviously, right now, Martial is the main striker, so having him fit for the start of the campaign is absolutely crucial.
Check out what Ten Hag had to say in full here:
“Today he was in the team training, so that is really hopeful,” said Ten Hag per ManUtd.com. “And, yeah, of course, when you have player in a squad you expect that he is available and then the players have to take the responsibility to be available.
“But when he’s not I have to deal with the situation and we show that we also then can be successful without that striker. But yeah, of course, it’s more easy when you have that striker in your team because I think every club who wins big trophies has scoring abilities in that team.”
It’s a tricky situation. The Frenchman is a very talented footballer. However, he hasn’t really showed off those qualities for about two years now. Injuries seriously destroyed last season for Martial. Hopefully, those problems are now behind him and a good pre-season could be key for that.
If it is Rasmus Hojlund who is signed, I do believe Martial will be the main man to start the campaign, so the ball is firmly in his court to prove his worth and take that opportunity.
Ten Hag is a big believer in Martial’s talent so the player does have that going for him. He does have to take this opportunity with both hands, though.
