Donny van de Beek is discussing a transfer to Real Sociedad as we stand.
Manchester United’s squad is still jam-packed with fringe players who just are not good enough to come in and do a job. Erik ten Hag is tasked with replacing those players with real quality, though it takes time.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that these players are on wages higher than they deserve, meaning interest in them is limited.
Donny van de Beek falls into this category. The Dutchman arrived at the club with promise aplenty, though has failed to live up to the hype. Now, he’s viewed as dispensable.
As things stand, he remains a Red Devil, though for how much longer who knows? Well, there is interest in the ex-Ajax man and it comes from Real Sociedad.
The BBC have provided an update on Van de Beek’s future, claiming that the United player is ‘in talks’ about a move away from Old Trafford, as he’s discussing things with Sociedad.
Van de Beek started in Dublin against Sociedad’s fierce rivals, Athletic Club, yesterday. He was substituted at half-time after another pretty average display.
The BBC add that the Reds are ‘keen’ to move Van de Beek on, along with a number of other players, in an effort to generate funds so Ten Hag can add further players to his squad this summer.
The verdict
I think it’s now agreed by everyone that Van de Beek should go. Whether he will is another matter entirely. The problem is that United will have to accept a super reduced fee to offset his high wages, or even subsidise his wages until his United contract officially runs out.
I have no confidence that Van de Beek will be playing his football elsewhere at the end of this month. That, in itself, is a massive problem.
